Throughout the years, we’ve remained dedicated to faith, service, and supporting one another. As we move forward, we continue to build on our rich foundation, embracing God’s purpose for the future.
On April 28, 1990 twelve people under the leadership of Rev. Rufus Pope were obedient to the call of God and on June 15th they officially organized the Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church of Detroit. These twelve people; Rev. Rufus Pope, Jr., Miranda Faye Pope, Rufus Pope, III, Clement Abrams, Patricia Bean, Pat Underwood, Georgia Butler, T. Rhenae Jones, Willie Mae McKithen, John McKithen, Reginald Sampson, and Roland Smith had captured the vision of a church composed of supernatural people doing supernatural things; a church steeped in the baptism of the Holy Spirit and all the gifts thereof; one that firmly believes in the power of prayer and is not ashamed to get on its knees as a body and pray. A church with a new healing ministry reaching out to all people to heal a wounded city; a place where people of all races, colors and backgrounds will be greeted with unconditional love and acceptance in Jesus name.
Pastor Pope began to have Bible study and prayer at his home. May 2, 1990 the charter members met with Rev. Robert Coleman of the Coleman Memorial Baptist Church. It was decided that Wednesday Night Bible study and prayer would begin on May 9, 1990 at Coleman Memorial Baptist Church at 6:30 PM.
July 1, 1990 housed in the Coleman Memorial Church at 1101 E. Grand Blvd, Mt. Sinai had its first Sunday Morning Service and Sunday school. That same evening at 5:00 PM the first Communion Service was held. Our first service saw the acceptance of 52 people into the congregation.
September 14, 1990 represented another milestone in the growth and development of Mt. Sinai as Rev. Eugene D. Gray and The First Church of Deliverance of Chicago, IL and friends from across the country came to share in the Pre-Installation Services for Pastor Rufus Calvin Pope Jr. This joyous weekend ended on September 15, 1990 when Pastor Pope was installed by Dr. Avery Aldridge pastor of Foss Ave Baptist Church - Flint, MI.
On October 26, 1990 members and friends joined together to celebrate the installation of Pastor Pope at our first church banquet held at the Roostertail Banquet Facility on the Detroit River.
Because of our belief in studying God’s word the Mt. Sinai congregation grew rapidly and the church began to search for a new home. Led by the Lord Pastor Pope found 8231 Second at Seward. After inquiring about leasing the building, Pastor Pope and a few of the founding members met in front of the building, formed a circle, and began to pray. The owners saw this and knew these were the people they wanted to have the church. They revealed to Pastor Pope that they asked the Lord to send them a praying church to occupy their building.
On February 17, 1991 a motorcade slowly but surely wound its way to our present location at 8231 Second Ave. With city officials, honored guests, and many well-wishers on hand, February 24, 1991 marked the dedication of our new church to the glory and honor of God.
With the death of Founder and Pastor Rufus C. Pope in February 1992 the Mt. Sinai family stood by faith as they were led by Co-Pastor Miranda Faye Pope. Prayerfully, the Mt. Sinai family knew that the Lord would send to pastor His church a man after His own heart.
Co-Pastor Pope along with Pastor Albert Jamison, Sr. and Pastor Wyatt Greenlee, Jr. met with the congregation as Co-Pastor Pope announced to the congregation that the Lord had revealed the new Pastor was to be Pastor Charles L. Middleton, Sr. After hearing from the Lord Pastor Middleton willingly and humbly accepted the call to become the Pastor of Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church and closed the doors of Greater Faith New Covenant Baptist Church where he was Pastor and Founder.
September 6, 1992 began a new phase for Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church. Hundreds of Mt. Sinai members, family and friends lined the street outside of Mt. Sinai cheering on the motorcade as it arrived with our new Pastor.
In January 1995 Pastor Middleton heard from the Lord concerning the name of Mt. Sinai and was led to change the name. April 16, 1995 marked the official name change to Mt. Zion New Covenant Baptist Church.
In 1996 Lady Mary E. Middleton was installed as Co-Pastor of Mt. Zion New Covenant BC.
October 26, 1999 the Mt. Zion congregation witnessed the consecration service for Pastor Charles L. Middleton, Sr., as he was elevated to the office of Bishop. This sacred service was officiated by Bishop Paul S. Morton, Presiding Bishop Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship International.
Under the leadership of Bishop Middleton, the Mt. Zion family has witnessed the ordination of elders and ministers, licensing of all Mt. Zion ministers, the laying on of hands of deacons and deaconesses, the blessing of many babies and many couples joined together in the union of holy matrimony.
In 2017 Bishop Middleton, Sr. stepped down as senior pastor and passed the mantle to his son. September 24, 2017 Pastor Charles L. Middleton, Jr. was installed as the new pastor of Mt. Zion New Covenant BC.
On August 26, 2020 Pastor Charles L. Middleton, Jr. was elevated to the office of Bishop.
Because we are a supernatural church, composed of supernatural people doing the business of the Father and because our members are active members with a desire to serve God and our community and the world abroad, we continue to prosper and grow in the knowledge of the word of God.
